about
"A Cradle Song" from Lorenzo Buhne's forthcoming album "William Blake : Songs"....coming our way Summer 2024!
NOTE FROM ARTIST
This Blake poem is a joy to sing and play. Always! His words of fragile innocence coupled with love, shine right through!
Before the Blake songs were recorded, they only lived in my head. All I knew was that the music should feel loose, relaxed, organic and alive.
The six musicians invited to play percussion had never heard the songs and unrehearsed, we were confronted with playing what came naturally simple, and in sync with each other.
On the day of the recording, once set up and ready to go, my boy Lorenzo Lucio (5 years of age), had also set up his own percussion space within our area and announced that he was playing too!
The musicians, understanding that this could be a disaster, eyed me, expecting a firm response. To their surprise, I agreed.
What I didn't realize was that during the recording, while playing percussion young Lorenzo Lucio was also singing his own melody, weaving it in and out of mine and the mic assigned to him picked up his youthful singing.
I discovered it during the mixing of the song.
So then, out of an already tremendous event, this ‘serendipitous gift’, makes the track much more meaningful and memorable to me.

lyrics
A Cradle Song Lyrics
Sweet dreams for a shade
O’er my lovely infant’s head;
Sweet dreams of pleasant streams
By happy, silent, moony beams.
Sweet sleep, with soft down
Weave thy brows an infant crown.
Sweet sleep, Angel mild,
Hover o’ar my happy child.
Sweet smiles, in the night
Hover over my delight;
Sweet smiles, Mother’s smiles,
All the livelong night beguiles.
Sweet moans, dovelike sighs,
Chase not slumber from thy eyes.
Sweet moans, sweeter smiles,
All the dovelike moans beguiles
Sleep, sleep, happy child,
All creation slept and smil’d;
Sleep, sleep, happy sleep,
While o’er the thy mother weep.
Sweet babe, in thy face
Holy image I can trace.
Sweet babe, once like thee,
Thy maker lay and wept for me,
Wept for me, for thee, for all,
When he was an infant small
Thou his image ever see,
Heavenly face that smiles on thee,
Smiles on thee, on me, on all;
Who became an infant small.
Infant smiles are his on smiles;
Heaven & earth to peace beguiles.
